Dr. Ela Hyland

Dr Ela is an Australian-born and trained Paediatric Surgeon and Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS, Paediatric Surgery).

Raised in regional New South Wales, she has a longstanding commitment to improving access to specialist care for children and families in rural and regional communities.

Dr Ela has recently relocated to Townsville with her husband and young daughter, and is proud to now call North Queensland home.

Dr Ela completed her specialist training across leading paediatric tertiary centres in Australia, including Queensland Children’s Hospital and The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

She has a particular clinical and research interest in paediatric burns, hypertrophic scarring, and vascular anomalies (including infantile haemangiomas), supported by a dedicated two-year fellowship in paediatric burns.

As a general paediatric surgeon, Dr Ela manages a broad range of surgical conditions, including undescended testes, testicular pain, inguinal and abdominal hernias, appendicitis, gastrostomy insertion, fundoplication, and gallbladder disease (including laparoscopic cholecystectomy).

Dr Ela also performs a wide range of common and minor procedures, including circumcision, skin lesion excision and scar management, tongue-tie and upper lip tie release, and the treatment of warts and ingrown toenails.

In addition, Dr Ela cares for children with gastrointestinal, urological, and colorectal conditions, including constipation, urinary incontinence, renal anomalies, and hypospadias.

Dr Ela offers antenatal consultations for hydronephrosis and other congenital conditions identified during pregnancy, supporting families with clear guidance and continuity of care from diagnosis through to postnatal management.

Dr Ela's focus is on delivering timely, high-quality, and accessible paediatric surgical care for children across North Queensland, with an emphasis on reducing wait times while minimising unnecessary healthcare costs for families.
